School Counseling
Overview
The role of the school counselor is to support the personal/social, academic, and career planning needs of all students. Support for students is delivered primarily through individual counseling, small group counseling, and classroom guidance.
Services Provided
Individual counseling is available to all students at the request of the student, teachers, administrators, or parents/guardians. Students can meet one on one with the counselor or could be brought together with other students to mediate conflict and problem solve. Parents/guardians are typically not notified when a student meets with the school counselor unless there is a larger concern to address. If it is found that the student is in need of more frequent support, short term counseling of approximately six weeks in length, will be discussed with the parent/guardian. Intensive, long term counseling is not a part of the school counseling program. If a parent/guardian is interested, a referral list for outside providers can be sent home.
Small group counseling is provided to students that are in need of additional support handling normal, developmentally appropriate concerns. These groups are held during lunch in the fall and the spring. Students are referred by their teachers. Small groups counseling covers topics such as emotional identification, emotional regulation, self-esteem, peer relationships, problem solving, goal setting, and communication skills. Parent/guardian permission is required to participate in groups.
Classroom guidance is provided once a month to every classroom to support academic, career, and personal/social development. These lessons are preventative in nature and are meant to provide students with skills to help them become confident learners, effective problem solvers, collaborative workers, and responsible citizens. Topics are developmentally appropriate for each grade level and consist of topics such as listening, accepting others, making good choices, career development, goal setting, and many others.
Student Recognition
The school counselor is also responsible for student recognition. Each month a character trait is highlighted from our district wide Character Strong SEL program. One student from each class is chosen as the Lakeview Hero for displaying this trait and is treated to a pizza lunch. The Kiwanis Club also recognizes one student each month. These students are chosen by their teachers for a variety of reasons and are announced by a Kiwanis member in their classroom. Bucket fillers are recognized for showing acts of kindness to their peers and teachers. These acts are written on buckets and displayed all month on a bulletin board. Each month, five random winners are announced as bucket filler winners and receive a prize.
