Bucket Fillers

At Lakeview, we use "Bucket-Filling" as part of our character development program, based on the children's book "Have You Filled A Bucket Today?: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids" by Carol McCloud. This program encourages positive behavior by promoting respect and by recognizing acts of kindness and appreciation of others. The basic concept of "bucket-filling" is that everyone carries an invisible bucket around all day long. We are either filling up or dipping into each other's buckets by what we say and what we do. Your bucket holds all the love and happiness that you receive each day. When your bucket is full, you feel happy. When your bucket is empty, you feel sad. When we are kind and treat others with respect, we fill their buckets and our own! Teachers recognize these students by writing their behaviors on buckets that are displayed on a bulletin board in the hallway. At the end of the month, the buckets are taken down and ten school winners are chosen. Those winners receive a small bucket with a sticker on it, a free ice cream pass, and a bucket filler necklace.
